Brian Sklodowski Qualifies for USA Junior Championships at 5,000m

RICHMOND, VA - William and Mary’s men’s track and field team opened the Fred Hardy Invitational Friday afternoon with one championship-qualifying performance and one all-time top-10 performance.

In the 5,000m run, freshman Brian Sklodowski (Newark, Del.) qualified for the USAT&F Junior National Championships with his time of 15:02.59, placing eighth in the race. To be eligible for Junior Nationals, athletes must not turn 20 in the same calendar year and meet published qualifying standards. Also in the 5,000m, senior Dave Mock (Johnstown, Pa.) took runner-up honors in 14:51.25, and classmate Jared Campbell (Franklin, Ind.) was third in 14:54.35. Freshman Tom Burke (Edina, Minn.), the 2007 CAA Rookie of the Year in cross country, placed fourth with a time of 14:56.06.

Sophomore Brandon Oliver (Richmond, Va.) took second in the hammer throw, powering the hammer to a personal-best distance of 153’ 8”, good for 10th-best in school history. Classmate Adam Gawne (Lyndonville, N.Y.) was third with a throw of 148’ 7”. Oliver also had a top-five showing in the shot put, registering a put of 47’ 11.25” for fourth place.

Freshman Chris McIntosh (Owings Mill, Md.) was runner-up in the 400m hurdles, timing 55.71 seconds. Sophomore Marty Ross (Brentwood, Tenn.) was fifth in the same race with a time of 57.11 seconds. In the 3,000m steeplechase, freshman Axel Stanovsky (Everett, Wash.) ran 9:58.12 for third place.

The Fred Hardy Invitational concludes tomorrow.
