Katie Guevel Earns ECAC Bid, Freshman Record on Second Day at Richmond

RICHMOND, VA - Freshman Katie Guevel (Burlington, Kan.) set three times inside the College’s all-time top-10 performers lists Saturday at the Fred Hardy Invitational, picking up an ECAC qualification and freshman record along the way. As a team, the William and Mary track and field squad set a total of six all-time top-10 marks Saturday.

Complete Results

Guevel won the 100m hurdles in 14.29, qualifying for the ECAC Championships and breaking the College’s freshman record of 14.95 set by Billie Hart on April 24, 1993. Her time ranks second in school history by nine-hundredths of a second. Guevel also won the 200m dash in 25.15 seconds, the third-fastest time ever run at the College. In her first collegiate 100m dash, Guevel took second in 12.47 seconds, ranking ninth all-time at W&M.

In the discus, sophomore Rebecca Mikulas (Troutville, Va.) was only about 10 inches shy of qualifying for the ECAC meet with her personal-record throw of 138’ 7”, finishing second. Her throw moves her up the College’s all-time chart to fifth. Right behind her with the sixth-greatest throw in school history was classmate Carly Morse (Sumerduck, Va.), who placed fourth in the day’s competition with a throw of 135’ 6”.

In the 400m dash, sophomore Dana Harvey (Mechanicsville, Va.) continued her amazing weekend by running 57.71 seconds for fourth place and bragging rights as the sixth-best quarter-miler in school history. Junior Ashley Madonick (Seaside Park, N.J.) ran 56.76 in the same race for second place, just shy of the ECAC-qualifying standard.

Sophomore Emily Anderson (Golf, Ill.) ran a personal-best 2:12.52 in the 800m, finishing second and moving up to 10th on the Tribe’s all-time top-performers list. Junior Lynn Morelli (Philadelphia, Pa.) also earned runner-up honors, timing 4:35.24 in the 1,500m.

A handful of Tribe athletes finished fifth in their respective events, including freshman Funke Fagbami (Wilmington, Del.), who timed 12.73 seconds in the 100m dash. Senior Brenna Blevins (Pulaski, Va.) ran 17.38 in the 100m hurdles, and sophomore Sallie Ford (Lynchburg, Va.) timed 10:26.11 in the 3,000m run.

William and Mary returns home next weekend, April 4-5, to host the 43rd Annual Colonial Relays. Running and jumping events will be held inside Zable Stadium, while throwing events will be held at the Stimson Throwing Events Area, northwest of the stadium by Fraternity Row. The schedule for the meet, lists of participating schools and All-Americans, and lists of past event champions can be found on the William and Mary website at http://www.tribeathletics.com/story.php/6652/.
