Tribe Football Holds First Extended Scrimmage of Spring

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Spring Photo Gallery - Pete Clawson

The College of William and Mary’s football program held its first extended scrimmage this afternoon with a 90-minute effort on the turf at Zable Stadium.

Both sides of the ball had its moments during the extended workout, with returning all-conference quarterback Jake Phillips (Warm Springs, Va.) looking comfortable at the controls of a diverse Tribe attack. Rising junior R.J. Archer (Albemarle, Va.) saw significant action under center with the team’s front line unit and displayed much of the athleticism that has made him one of the team’s leading receivers the past two seasons. Rising sophomore wideout Cameron Dohse (Centerville, Va.) turned in a pair of highlight reel quality catches, reeling in a pair of deep balls, while fellow sophomore Chase Hill (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on a 30-plus yard diving grab to end the afternoon’s efforts.

Defensively, rising senior linebacker Josh Rutter (Union Bridge, Md.) was solid in the middle of an aggressive and intense Tribe defensive effort. Rising junior defensive end CJ Herbert (Germantown, Md.) created a fumble with a big hit that was recovered by rising sophomore cornerback Ben Cottingham. Cottingham also broke up a pair of passes on the afternoon, as did rising junior safety Robert Livingston (Hendersonville, N.C.).

The team is roughly half way through its spring workout session, as two weeks remain before the College’s closes camp with the annual Spring Game, which will be held in Zable Stadium on April 12th.

With 18 returning starters coming back from a season ago, the Tribe is working towards making an improvement on its 4-7 record of a season ago. The College will start the season with a difficult road trip to North Carolina State on Sept. 6th, but will also have a home schedule that will feature six home contests, which will begin Sept. 13 with a night game against Virginia Military Institute.
