03/31/08 8:53PM
Richmond, Va. - After a week that saw the William and Mary women’s lacrosse squad record a pair of wins, the victories kept coming as senior midfielder Jaime Sellers (Kennebunk, Maine) was named as the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Week this afternoon, while freshman midfielder Grace Golden (Manhasset, N.Y.) earned the league’s Rookie of the Week accolades.
Sellers continued what has been an outstanding season by recording seven goals (and eight total points) over two games. She started off her week by recording three of the team’s nine goals in the Tribe’s 9-7 upset win over No. 10 Stanford (Tuesday, March 25). In the game against the Cardinal, where every possession was critical, Sellers also provided three crucial ground balls and caused a turnover. In the College’s 16-10 win over the Golden Bears on Friday afternoon (March 28), Sellers found the net four times and helped on another score in the team’s 16-goal outburst. The midfielder displayed her considerable field skills vs. Cal, as she also recorded three draws and scooped a ground ball. For the season, Sellers has 41 goals and 45 total points. She has recorded at least a hat-trick in all the team’s first 10 games and is just one goal shy of entering into the team’s single-season top 10 list (42 is currently 10th-place).
Golden was simply sensational over the Tribe’s two game stretch, as she factored into play on all ends of the field. By week’s end, Golden had registered a scintillating seven goals (and eight points), seven groundballs, five draws and four caused turnovers. She started her week by recording a personal-season high-five draws in the upset win over Stanford. Her efforts played a significant role in helping the Tribe gain a crucial 11-7 edge over the 10th-ranked Cardinal in the draw category. She also contributed three ground balls on the evening and caused a turnover. Along with creating possessions, Golden also was able finish for College, as she was an efficient two of three in shot attempts against Stanford. In the game with Cal, Golden was a force on the offensive end, as she contributed four goals and an assist in the 16-10 win. Her speed and athleticism were on display in helping the Tribe successfully clear 17 of their 18 attempts on the afternoon, as she is a major factor in W&M’s transition game. If that weren’t enough, the freshman standout also led the team with four ground balls and three caused turnovers against Cal.
The 9-7 win over 10th-ranked Stanford marked the second top-10 win in the last two years for second-year Tribe Head Coach Christine Halfpenny. Halfpenny helped author the team’s thrilling, double-overtime 10-9 win over then-9th-ranked James Madison last season. Coincidently, the Dukes are the Tribe’s next opponent, as the College will travel to Harrisonburg for a 4:00 pm draw this Friday afternoon. As one of the league’s longest rivalries, W&M will carry an impressive three-game winning streak in the series into Friday’s action. The Tribe won on its last venture to Harrisonburg, 12-6 in 2006. The College leads the all-time series with JMU, 30-23-1.
