Kazuba, Guevel Sweep CAA Performer of the Week Honors

RICHMOND, VA - No fooling, William and Mary swept the Colonial Athletic Association weekly awards for women’s track and field. Freshman Katie Guevel (Burlington, Kan.) was named the track athlete of the week, and sophomore Nicole Kazuba (Chantilly, Va.) was named the field athlete of the week.

Guevel had three impressive performances over the weekend, led by the 14.29 she clocked to win the 100m hurdles and qualify for the ECAC Championships. Her time broke the freshman record of 14.95 set by Billie Hart in 1993, and is only .09 seconds away from being the overall school record. Guevel also won the 200m dash in 25.15, the third-best time in school history, and took second in the 100m dash in 12.47, which ranks her ninth all-time at the College.

Kazuba was the headline act in a very impressive weekend by the College’s pole vaulters, winning the event with a career-best height of 12’ 8”. With the clearance, Kazuba qualified for both the ECAC Championship and the NCAA East Regional, and currently ranks 17th nationally. Finally, Kazuba broke Charlotte LaRoche’s outdoor school record of 12’ 7.5”, set back in 2002.

William and Mary returns home this weekend, April 4-5, to host the 43rd Annual Colonial Relays. Running and jumping events will be held inside Zable Stadium, while throwing events will be held at the Stimson Throwing Events Area, northwest of the stadium by Fraternity Row. The schedule for the meet, lists of participating schools and All-Americans, and lists of past event champions can be found on the William and Mary website at http://www.tribeathletics.com/story.php/6652/.
