Tribe to Play at Georgia State This Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team will look to extend its three-game winning streak when it returns to conference action with a series at Georgia State this weekend. Friday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., while the games on Saturday and Sunday will both begin at 1 p.m.

The College (19-10, 9-6) will send senior LHP Pete Vernon (3-2) to the hill in the opener, while the Panthers will counter with LHP Robinson Polanco (5-1). W&M RHP Jeremy Neustifter (1-2) will get the start on Saturday against GSU’s LHP Will Palmer (2-1), while freshman RHP Tim Norton (4-1) will go against RHP Kenny Camp (2-1) in the series finale.

In its last outing, the Tribe earned a 9-7 victory at Liberty in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. Junior Mike Sheridan led W&M with a pair of two-run home runs and finished the evening 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Junior James Williamson added a solo home run, while classmate Ben Guez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.

One of the most productive offensive teams in the nation this season, the Tribe continues to rank among the country’s best in a number of categories. Entering the week, W&M ranked third in doubles (75), fifth in hits (324), 11th in batting average (.339), 14th in slugging percentage (.553), 14th in stolen bases (54) and 17th in runs scored (224).

Individually, a number of W&M players also rank among the nation’s best in various categories. Sheridan is fourth in hits (48), seventh in total bases (81), eighth in runs scored (36) and 17th in RBI (36), while senior Tim Park ranks ninth in hits (45), 10th in doubles (13) and 12th in total bases (78). Guez ranks 14th in runs scored (35).

Georgia State enters this weekend’s series having won seven of its last 10 games and owns a 17-10 record overall and a 6-6 mark in league play. As a team, the Panthers rank second in the conference in batting average (.326), runs scored (221) and hits (309). Individually, Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas leads the team with a .388 batting average, while Derek Simmons is also hitting better than .380.
