Cam Shriver, 4x1,500m Team Win Relays Titles

WILLIAMSBURG - The threatening skies held off until literally minutes after the completion of the final event Saturday at the 43rd annual Colonial Relays, but the gray clouds couldn’t dampen the excitement on the track as the William and Mary men outlasted Michigan State 101-88 for the team championship.

Final Results

The day started off very early with a 9:30 a.m. tee time for the hammer throw, which was won by post-collegian Jesse Doty with a throw of 212’ 2”, a performance that provisionally-qualifies Doty for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Monmouth’s Ed Skowronski was the top collegian in the field with an NCAA Regional-qualifying throw of 188’ 6”, and Michigan State’s Kyle Strotbaum was third with a throw of 186’ 4”.

The top five teams in the 4x800m relay all qualified for the IC4A Championships, led by Seton Hall’s squad which timed 7:31.46. Fordham was second in 7:35.81, and Georgetown took the bronze medal with a time of 7:37.11. William and Mary’s team of Sean Mahoney (Wayne, Pa.), Cabell Rosanelli (Richmond, Va.), Harry Miller (Portland, Ore.), and Brian Sklodowski (Newark, Del.) placed fourth in 7:38.05.

Cortland State was the runner-up in the 4x100m relay last year at the Division III National Championships, and the Red Dragons did not disappoint today in winning the event with a national-provisional time of 41.50 seconds. Yale University took second in 41.81 and Howard was third in 42.24 seconds, leading a total of five IC4A-qualifying squads.

Kyron Foster of Michigan State won the triple jump with a leap of 47’ 5.25”, and Christopher Newport’s Isaac Bell provisionally-qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships with his second-place leap of 47’ 1”. Brandon Turner of Pittsburgh was a very close third, jumping 47’ 0.25”.

William and Mary junior Cam Shriver (Oxford, Ohio) tied his career-best in the jump with his NCAA Regional-qualifying mark of 6’ 10.75”, which tied for the top mark of the day with Nicholas Frimpong of Seton Hall. As was the case a month ago when Shriver won the IC4A indoor title (at the same height), Shriver was named champion today on the basis of clearing the standard in fewer attempts than Frimpong. Kris Amos of Michigan State and Tribe senior Brandon Evans (Virginia Beach, Va.) tied for third place after clearing the bar at 6’ 6.75”.

Yale was the only team to dip under 10 minutes in the distance medley relay, taking the title in 9:56.53. The race for second was tight with the silver going to St. Francis (Pa.) in 10:03.12. William and Mary’s team of Lewis Woodard (Charlotte, N.C.), Florian Cords (Williamsburg, Va.), Sean Sewell (Raleigh, N.C.), and Charlie Swartz (Manassas, Va.) finished third in 10:04.19.

Daniel Kinney from Howard outkicked Georgetown’s Chris Kinney 14.39-14.45 to win the 110m hurdles championship, with both men earning bids to the IC4A Championships. Kyle Grady from Rutgers also qualified for IC4As, finishing third in 14.78 seconds.

In the pole vault, Michigan State’s Logan Lynch was the only man over the bar at 15’ 11”. Ronald Walter of Pittsburgh placed second over William and Mary’s Kiernan Lofland (Crozier, Va.) on the basis of fewer attempts needed after both competitors had a top height of 15’ 7”.

All-American Amaan Siddeeq of Cortland State won the 100m dash with a Division III provisional-qualifying time of 10.56 seconds, only one hundredth of a second behind the automatic standard. James Bush of St. Francis (Pa.) took second in 10.75, and Yale’s Victor Cheng claimed the bronze with a time of 10.77 seconds. Both men qualified for the IC4A Championships.

Virginia Commonwealth won the 4x200m relay by a comfortable margin, timing 1:25.43. Rutgers took second in 1:26.52, just ahead of Yale (1:26.61).

Ryan Martin of Mount St. Mary’s was more than two feet ahead of the competition in the discus, qualifying for the IC4A Championships with his throw of 160’ 4”. Jason Brown of Michigan State was second with a throw of 154’ 2”, and Ben Madeira of St. Francis (Pa.) claimed the bronze medal with a throw of 151’ 2”.

William and Mary proved to be the class of the meet in the 4x1,500m relay, timing 15:35.73 for a 17.5 second victory. The winning team was comprised of Karl Lang (Oak Hill, Va.), Patterson Wilhelm (Lynchburg, Va.), Ben Massam (Chatham, Va.), and Ian Fitzgerald (Glenshaw, Pa.), the latter two of whom each claimed their second gold of the meet. Iona placed second in 15:53.23, and Virginia Commonwealth was third in 15:55.46.

The meet came to a close with the 4x400m relay, which was won by the team from Seton Hall with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:11.87. Fairleigh Dickinson also qualified for IC4As in 3:15.41, and Rutgers was third with an IC4A time of 3:16.70.

William and Mary will return to action next weekend at the Lou Onesty Invitational, April 12 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
