Third Times a Charm: Cojanu, Pagon Garner CAA Weekly Honor, Again

Williamsburg - For the second straight week and the third time this season, the William and Mary men’s tennis duo of senior Alex Cojanu and junior Dominic Pagon were named the Colonial Athletic Association Doubles Team of the Week on April 8. Cojanu and Pagon also received the honor on March 16 and April 2.

Cojanu and Pagon played a vital roll in both singles and doubles as the Tribe tallied its first win over No. 34-ranked Notre Dame in 30 years. In doubles action, the pair upset No. 54-ranked Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu, 8-2, at the No. 1 pairs’ spot. The victory jumped started the Green and Gold on the way to claiming the doubles point. It was the third win of the year over a nationally ranked team for Cojanu and Pagon.

In singles, Cojanu provided a crucial win at the top spot. He avenged an earlier loss to Helgeson, disposing of the No. 42-ranked player in the country, 6-1, 6-4, in straight sets. It was his 10th career win over a nationally ranked foe. With the match tied at three, Pagon clinched the Tribe upset with a straight sets win at the No. 3 slot. Pagon also avenged a fall loss to Andrew Roth, downing the Irish opposition, 7-6, 6-4, for his 19th singles win of the season.

Following its 4-3 upset of Notre Dame, the Tribe jumped six spots in the ITA computer rankings released on April 6. The College once again occupies the No. 57 in the national poll after knocking off its highest ranked foe of the year.

The Tribe will wrap up the regular season with Senior Day on Friday, April 11. The College will host a doubleheader against No. 65 South Alabama at 2 p.m. and Howard at 6:30 p.m. with both matches being played at the Busch Tennis Courts. W&M will honor its pair of seniors, Alex Cojanu and Kavi Sud, during the doubleheader.
