Women’s Golf Has School-Record Showing at Lady Seahawk Invitational

WALLACE, N.C. - Three school records fell for the William and Mary women’s golf team Tuesday at the Lady Seahawk Invitational, as the Tribe finished ninth in the 16-team event despite very strong play from all five of the team’s golfers. North Carolina State won the team title with 896 total strokes (32-over), and UNC Wilmington’s Carmen Perez-Narbon won the individual medal in a playoff with UNC Greensboro’s Erica Creed.

Before the third and final round could begin, teams had to finish the second round which was halted by darkness Monday night. Continuing the success from Monday morning, W&M had every player again shoot in the 70s only the fourth time that has ever happened, and finished the round with a score of 308, tied for the fourth-best second round in school history. Senior Erika Oldenkamp (Hinsdale, Ill.) led the way with her 75, and her 36-hole total of 152 (+8) was tied for the ninth-best all-time at W&M in a par-72 tournament. Freshman Avi Hockfield (Gladwyne, Pa.) shot 77 in that second round, while classmate Sarah Whitney (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore Morgan Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) each carded 78 strokes. Senior Marissa Sprick (Windermere, Fla.) finished out the round with a score of 79. William and Mary’s 36-hole total of 37-over (613) broke the previous school record, set five weeks ago at the Cuthbert Cup, by five strokes.

In the third round, the Tribe nearly had everyone shoot in the 70s for an unprecedented third-straight round en route to a team score of 302. That score is tied for the fifth-best single round all-time; it also ranks as the second-best third round I school history, and tied for the fourth-best par-72 round. Oldenkamp again led the way, shooting an even-par 72. Her effort ranks fourth among all third-round scores and is tied for ninth among all par-72 rounds. Oldenkamp’s 54-hole score of 224 (+8) placed her in a tie for eighth in the tournament, and set the school record for the best score in a par-72 tournament (fourth-best overall in school history). Sprick closed the tournament with a round of 75 to boost herself into a tie for 25th at 13-over. Hockfield shot 78 to finish tied for 41st at 17, one stroke ahead of Stepanek (third-round 77) and Whitney (third-round 81). The team’s 54-hole score of 915 (+51) is a new school record by seven strokes, exceeding the 58-over 922 scored at this very same tournament in 2003.

Oldenkamp’s eighth-place effort was also notable for a few other reasons. It stands as the eighth top-10 finish of her career, tying Oldenkamp for the sixth-most in school history. She also surpassed the 500-win mark for the season, the first time in her career she has done so, and only the 14th time any women’s golfer has had more than 500 wins in one season. For her career, Oldenkamp has amassed 1,510 head-to-head victories, which ranks as the sixth-best total in school history.

The Tribe returns to action one week from Friday, April 18-20, at the CAA Championships. William and Mary has a bit of a home-course advantage this year, as the tournament is being held on the Green Course at the Golden Horseshoe in Colonial Williamsburg.
