WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Five William and Mary pitchers combined to allow just three hits as the Tribe earned a 16-1 victory against George Washington at Plumeri Park on Wednesday evening. With the triumph, W&M (21-11) has won five of its last six games and improves its record at home to 16-3. Additionally, the College is 11-4 in non-conference games this season.
Sophomore RHP Cody Winslow (3-1) had an outstanding performance on the mound and recorded the win. The Virginia Beach, Va., native worked 5.0 innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits and no walks. Additionally, Winslow retired 14 of the final 15 hitters he faced. Junior Jeremy Neustifter, sophomore Kevin Landry, freshman Logan Billbrough and sophomore Tyler Truxell all pitched a scoreless inning apiece without allowing a hit.
Senior Greg Maliniak finished the evening 1-for-3 with a grand slam, five RBI and two runs scored, while senior Mike Sheridan went 3-for-3 with three doubles. Junior Tyler Stampone also had three hits and scored twice, and senior Tim Park went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
George Washington tallied the contest’s initial run in the top of the first. Bryan Hwang registered a one-out single through the right side, and Charlie Kruer followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Curtis Edward then drove in Hwang when he grounded into a fielder’s choice.
The Tribe answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs off a grand slam by Maliniak. Senior Paul Juliano led off the frame with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stampone. After junior Ben Guez struck out looking, Sheridan walked and Park reached on an infield single. Maliniak then cleared the bases when he drove a 3-1 offering over the right field fence.
With Ryan LaPointe on in relief of starter Chris Davis, W&M added a run in the bottom of the third. Stampone recorded a leadoff single to left center, and Guez was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. Sheridan then drove in Stampone with a double to left.
The Green and Gold extended their lead to 9-1 with four more runs in the fifth. Guez led off the inning with a single through the right side, and Sheridan followed with a double to left center. Park then plated both runners with a single up the middle. Maliniak followed with a walk, and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Stanfield plated the third score when he grounded out to short, while freshman Derrick Osteen drove in the final run with a single to center.
The College pulled away with seven more runs in the eighth to increase the lead to 16-1. With Jim Duggan on in relief to start the ninth, Stampone recorded a leadoff double to left and Guez was hit by a pitch. Franklin, Maliniak, Williamson and Jensen then drew consecutive walks to bring in three runs, while another score came across on a wild pitch. After Osteen drew the fifth straight walk of the inning to load the bases again, Tommy Gately entered the game in relief. Another run came across when Jones reached on an error by GW’s second baseman, while Stampone followed with a RBI single to center. Osteen then capped off the seven-run inning as he scored when GW’s catcher misfired on throw back to Gately.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts New York Tech for a four-game, non-conference series this weekend.
