Tribe Falls at Drexel

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and for the William and Mary’s 18th-ranked women’s lacrosse squad, its four-game winning streak went by the wayside Friday after-noon as it ran into a buzz saw in hosting Drexel University, falling 17-6 in Philadelphia.

After two weeks of dealing out the upsets, the College had one dealt upon them, as the loss dropped the squad to 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 6-7 overall. Prior to Friday evening, the Tribe had ripped off four-straight wins (three of which have come against ranked opponents), which stood as the team’s longest winning streak since 2001. Drexel improved to 1-3 in CAA play and 9-5 overall.

The Dragons simply dominated all phases of play on the afternoon, as they outshoot the College 46-15 and outdrew the Tribe 17-7. Drexel was responsible for causing 14 of W&M’s 21 total turnovers and were able to hustle 17 ground balls, compared to the Tribe’s 12.

William and Mary came out and posted the first two goals of the contest, leading 2-0 just seven minutes into play. But, the remaining 43 minutes of play effectively belonged to Drexel. The Dragons ended the first half with a 10-1 run. The Tribe mirrored its first half start, by collecting the first two goals of the second half, moving the score to 10-5, but it was as close as the College would get for the remainder, as Drexel closed out play with a 7-1 run.

Despite the 17 goals allowed, freshman net-minder Emily Geary (Wayne, Pa.) was perhaps the best player on the field for the Tribe this afternoon, as she turned back a career-high 18 shots. Sophomore Mary Zulty (Jarrettsville, Md.) led the College with a pair of scores, while senior all-America candidate, midfielder Jaime Sellers (Kennebunk, Maine), also found the back of the net and continued her streak of scoring at least one point in each of the Tribe 13 games this season. The Tribe will look get back into the winning column in its next contest, as it will continue its weekend road swing at Hofstra on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a noon draw.
