Three School Records Highlight Weekend for Women's Track and Field

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The William and Mary women’s track and field team headed up interstate 64 this weekend to the Lou Onesty Invitational for a final tune-up before the Colonial Athletic Association Championships next week, setting three school records and earning four bids to the ECAC Championships.

Junior Abby Lemon (Berryville, Va.) started things on Friday afternoon in the hammer throw, winning the event with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 167’ 9”. Two inches better than the record-throw she had last week at the Colonial Relays, it was the third time this season that Lemon has revised her own school record.

Saturday belonged to freshman Katie Guevel (Burlington, Kan.), who had identical third-place finishes in the 100m hurdles and 200m dash, as well as finishing ninth in the javelin throw. Guevel’s time of 14.01 in the 100m hurdles broke the school record of 14.20 set by Lisa Harding in 1990 and qualified her for the ECAC Championships. She also qualified for ECACs in the 200m dash after timing 24.90 seconds, eighth-tenths of a second better than the 24.98 run by DeTrease Harrison in 1989. Guevel’s throw of 122’ 11” in the javelin ranks her as the ninth-best thrower in school history.

Also on Saturday, sophomore Nicole Kazuba (Chantilly, Va.) continued her domination of the pole vault with a winning height of 12’ 5.5”, well ahead of the ECAC-qualifying barrier. Kazuba has won all four pole vault competitions this outdoor season. Senior Erin Gnass Brentwood, Tenn.), who has already qualified for the ECAC Championships, took fifth with a height of 11’ 5.75”, and sophomore Jennifer Garrott (Burke, Va.) was eighth after jumping a career-best 10’ 11.75”, which ties her for seventh all-time at the College.

William and Mary returns to Williamsburg next Friday and Saturday to host the CAA Championships, where the team will be looking for its seventh title of the past eight years.
