W&M to Play Liberty and Longwood

WILLIAMSBURG - Currently on a five-game winning streak and having won nine of its last 10 contests, the William and Mary baseball team will return to action with a pair of non-conference games this week. The Tribe (25-11) will host Liberty at Plumeri Park on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before playing at Longwood on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

During the weekend, the College earned a four-game series sweep against New York Tech in Williamsburg. Junior Ben Guez had an outstanding series at the plate versus the Bears, going 7-for-12 with two home runs, seven RBI, six runs scored and a pair of doubles. Additionally, the Houston, Texas native extended his hitting streak to 26 games. Senior Tim Park also posted impressive numbers and went 8-for-14, while junior Mike Sheridan went 7-for-18. As a team, the Tribe scored more than 10 runs per game during the series and hit eight home runs.

W&M continues to lead the Colonial Athletic Association in virtually every offensive category, including batting average (.339), slugging percentage (.540), on-base percentage (.425), runs scored (296), hits (416), RBI (260), doubles (96), total bases and stolen bases (69).

Individually, Sheridan leads the CAA in runs scored (47), RBI (47), doubles (15) and total bases (108). Additionally he ranks second in hits (61), fourth in batting average (.424) and fifth in slugging percentage (.750). Guez leads the con-ference in runs scored (47) and on-base percentage (.518), while he ranks third in doubles (13) and fourth in hits (55). Park currently leads the league in batting average (.444), while he is second in on-base percentage (.516) and doubles (15), third in hits (60) and total bases (100), and fourth in runs scored (42).

Liberty (17-17) is currently on a three-game winning streak after sweeping its series at Radford over the weekend. Tuesday’s contest will mark the second meeting between W&M and the Flames, as the Tribe earned a 9-7 triumph in Lynchburg on April 1. Sheridan came up big in the win, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. LU is led by David Giammaresi, who is hitting .381, while P.K. Keller and Cody Brown are both batting .360 or better.

Prior to taking on the College, Longwood will play at Old Dominion on Tuesday. The Lancers are 20-13 this season and took both games of a doubleheader against North Carolina Central in its last outing. Phil Cerreto leads the team with a .409 batting average, while Robbie Bailey is hitting .368. Last season, W&M posted a 2-0 record against Longwood, winning 3-1 on the road and 6-4 at Plumeri Park.

The Tribe is 15-4 in non-conference action this season.
