Tribe Earns CAA Championship Top Seed

Richmond, Va. - The No. 22-ranked William and Mary women’s tennis team will be the top seed at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, the league office announced on Monday. The Tribe will open with the winner of No. 8 seed James Madison and No. 9 seed George Mason at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 18. The 2008 CAA Championship will be April 17-20 at the Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va.

W&M will look for the program's 20th CAA title in the 23-year history of the league. The College won its 19th league title in perfect fashion a season ago, downing Towson, Georgia State and VCU, all by 4-0 scores. Megan Moulton-Levy was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the CAA Championship for the second time in her career.

The first round of the CAA Championship will be Thursday, April 17, with No. 6 UNC Wilmington facing No. 11 Drexel, No. 7 Hofstra battling No. 10 Towson and No. 8 James Madison squaring off with No. 9 George Mason. All three matches will be played at 11:30 a.m. The No. 3 seed Old Dominion will open quarterfinal action with the winner of UNCW and Drexel at 9 a.m., followed by No. 2 VCU and the winner of Hofstra and Towson at 11:30 a.m. The final two Friday quarterfinals will be the Tribe versus James Madison or George Mason at 2 p.m. and the No. 4 seed Georgia State against the No. 5 seed Delaware at 3:30 p.m. The semifinals are both slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday with the championship to be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 20. The winner of the CAA Championship will garner the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The College enters the championship on a six-match winning streak. W&M owns a 14-8 ledger this season, including a perfect 2-0 mark against the CAA, while facing an incredibly tough schedule. The Green and Gold schedule this season has been comprised of 17 teams currently ranked in the ITA computer rankings, including 10 top-25 opponents. In CAA play, the Tribe tallied wins over VCU (5-2) and Old Dominion (7-0).
