Kavi Sud Named CAA Singles Player of the Week

Williamsburg - William and Mary senior men’s tennis player Kavi Sud was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Singles Player of the Week following the Tribe’s Senior Day doubleheader against No. 65 South Alabama and Howard on April 11. The ITA computer rankings were released on April 13 with the Tribe coming in at No. 63 in the team poll with senior Alex Cojnau and a Tribe doubles team also garnering national rankings.

Sud claimed the Tribe’s lone singles victory in the 4-1 setback to South Alabama. He breezed past Michael O’Brien, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 position. He followed that performance up with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Armon Murray at the No. 3 singles slot. The wins pushed Sud’s season singles ledger to 6-6 and his dual match mark to 5-2. It marks the second time this season that Sud has won a CAA weekly honor and the sixth time this season the Tribe has received a weekly league accolade. He also received a weekly honor on March 9 as the CAA Doubles Team of the Week along with freshman Sebastien Vidal.

The Tribe garnered the No. 63 spot in the ITA computer rankings released this week. The Tribe also had a singles player and a doubles team ranking in the individual rankings released on April 13. Senior Alex Cojanu was ranked No. 121 nationally in singles after upsetting then-No. 42 Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame on April 6. Cojanu owns 15 singles victories on the season. The Tribe tandem of Cojanu and sophomore Keziel Juneau was ranked No. 33 in the doubles rankings.

W&M will return to action in the CAA Quarterfinals, Friday, April 18, at the Huntington Park Tennis Center in New-port News, Va. The No. 2 seed Tribe will face the winner of No. 7 seed Delaware and No. 10 George Mason at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The winner will get a semifinal date with either No. 3 Old Dominion or No. 6 James Madison at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. The CAA Championship Match is slated for 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 20. The winner of the league title will receive the conference automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
