Tribe Blanks Delaware in CAA Quarterfinals

Newport News, Va. - The No. 2 seed William and Mary men’s tennis team breezed into the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship with a 4-0 win over No. 7 seed Delaware on Friday afternoon at the Huntington Park Tennis Center. It marked the Tribe’s first meeting with Delaware since 2004 and the College improved to 15-12 on the year. The triumph also marked the ninth time under head coach Peter Daub that the Tribe has tallied 15 or more victories in a season.

The newly formed doubles pair of junior Marwan Ramadan and sophomore Keziel Juneau continued to impress at the No. 2 doubles position. The tandem cruised to its second straight win, downing Sam Barrer and Camilo Perez, 8-1. The All-CAA doubles pair of senior Kavi Sud and freshman Sebastien Vidal clinched the initial point of the match for the College with an 8-3 win over Chris Hincker and Jon Schwartz at the No. 3 slot. The pair improved to 15-4 as a team this season.

First-Team All-CAA singles choice Alex Cojanu set the pace for the College in singles with a dominating performance at the No. 1 slot. The No. 121-ranked player in the country torched Delaware’s Austin Longacre, 6-0, 6-1, to push the Tribe advantage to 2-0. The win was Cojanu’s 16th of the season and the 77th of his Tribe career. The 77 singles wins moves him into a tie for ninth on the W&M career singles wins list with Lee Harang (1994-99).

Vidal continued his strong play on the day and moved the Tribe within a singles victory of the match with his straight-set triumph at the No. 5 spot. The Green and Gold rookie upstaged Schwartz, 6-1, 6-2, for his 13 singles victory of the season.

Ramadan clinched the team’s passage to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nolan Greenberg at the No. 2 singles position. The triumph was Ramadan’s second straight win and his team-leading 22nd singles victory of the season.

The Tribe will continue its push for the CAA Championship when it faces No. 3 seed Old Dominion in the semifinals at 10 a.m. on April 19. The Saturday morning match will be played at the Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va. Earlier this season, W&M defeated ODU, 5-2, in Norfolk. The winner will earn a spot in the CAA Championship on Sunday at 10 a.m.
