Park and Sheridan Selected to Dick Howser Trophy Watch List

DALLAS - William and Mary senior catcher Tim Park and junior first baseman Mike Sheridan have been selected to the 2008 Dick Howser Trophy Watch List by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The list is comprised of 50 candidates who will be considered for the national honor that recognizes the top player in collegiate baseball. W&M was one of just nine programs to have more than one player named to the list.

Park and Sheridan’s selections mark the second consecutive season in which W&M has had a player on the list, as Greg Sexton earned the honor in ’07.

Selected to the Preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watch List and the Johnny Bench Award Watch List earlier this year, Park leads the Colonial Athletic Association in batting average (.435) and ranks among the league’s top five in on-base percentage (.500), hits (70), doubles (17), slugging percentage (.720), runs scored (49), RBI (46) and total bases (116). He also entered the week ranked among the nation’s top 20 in hits (fourth), batting average (eighth), total bases (13) and doubles (19).

Park has registered 20 multi-hit games this season and driven in at least two runs on 14 occasions. Additionally, the Silver Spring, Md., native recently posted an 18-game hitting streak.

Sheridan currently leads the conference in batting average (.435), runs scored (56), hits (73), doubles (18) and total bases (126), while he ranks second in slugging percentage (.750) and RBI (53). Entering the week, he led the nation in hits and ranked among the country’s top 20 in total bases (fourth), runs (sixth), doubles (11th), batting average (12th), RBI (15) and slugging percentage (18th).

Sheridan hit safely in the first 20 contests this season and has registered 25 multi-hit games.

Both Park and Sheridan have been instrumental in the Tribe’s success this season, as the team currently boasts a 30-12 record overall and is third in the conference standings. Coming off a victory at 16th-ranked Virginia on Wednesday, W&M needs just eight more wins to establish a single-season program record.
