Sheridan Honored as CAA Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. - After an impressive set of performances last week, junior first baseman Mike Sheridan has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week. It marks the third time this season Sheridan has garnered the honor, as he also earned the award during consecutive weeks in early March.

In four games, Sheridan posted a .474 batting average (9-for-19) with two home runs, 11 RBI, nine runs scored and three doubles. Additionally, he recorded a .947 slugging percentage and a .545 on-base percentage.

In the series opener at Towson, Sheridan tallied his third multi-home run effort of the season, going 2-for-5 with a pair of two-run blasts. In the 20-8 triumph against the Tigers on Saturday, Sheridan went 4-for-5 with four RBI, four runs scored and two doubles, while he went 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored in the 14-9 win on Sunday.

A 2008 Dick Howser Trophy Watch List honoree, Sheridan currently leads the CAA in hits (81), runs scored (65), RBI (63), total bases (143) and doubles (21), while he ranks second in batting average (.443) and slugging percentage (.781). He also ranks among the conference’s top five in on-base percentage (.498) and home runs (13).

While updated national stats have not been released this week, Sheridan led the country in hits and ranked among the top 20 in total bases, runs scored, doubles, batting average, RBI and slugging percentage last week.

The Washington, D.C., native is closing in on a number of single-season school records and already ranks among W&M’s top 10 in batting average, hits, RBI, runs scored, home runs, doubles, slugging percentage and total bases.

Although Sheridan has posted impressive stats all season, he has played particularly well in the last 14 games. During the stretch, he is hitting .500 (30-for-60) with four home runs, 23 RBI, 25 runs scored and 11 doubles. Additionally, he has registered a .883 slugging percentage and a .559 on-base percentage.

After going 3-1 last week, which included a victory at No. 16 Virginia, the Tribe currently owns a 32-13 record overall and a 15-8 mark in conference play (third in the CAA standings). With nine games still remaining on its regular-season slate, W&M has already equaled the third-most wins in school history and needs just six more victories to break the program’s record. W&M has also won 16 of its last 19 games.

The Tribe will return to action when it hosts Longwood for a doubleheader next Saturday at Plumeri Park.
