Lewis Woodard Earns IC4A Qualification at Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX, VA - A pair of post-season qualifying marks in the 1,500m run highlighted the day Saturday for the William and Mary men’s track and field team. The squad was taking a much needed break from the rigors of final exams and competing at the George Mason Spring Invitational.

Redshirt-freshman Lewis Woodard (Charlotte, N.C.) earned the first IC4A qualification of his career Saturday, running 3:51.86 in the 1,500m for fourth place. Senior Karl Lang (Oak Hill, Va.) was fifth in 3:52.15, just behind the qualifying standard (3:52.00). Freshman Brian Sklodowski (Newark, Del.) ran 3:55.52 for 10th place, re-qualifying for this summer’s USAT&F Junior National Championships with his best time of season thus far.

William and Mary swept the top five spots in the 3,000m steeplechase, led by true freshman Sean Sewell (Raleigh, N.C.) in 9:25.88. Classmate Pete Asaro (Gloucester, Mass.) was second in 9:30.47, and senior Bryce Wilk (Millbrook, N.Y.) was third in 9:36.40. Freshman Paul Norland (Falls Church, Va.) took fourth in 9:50.96, finishing just ahead of sophomore Robert Sagar (Alexandria, Va.), fifth in 9:51.10.

Redshirt-freshman Dan Klatzkin (Gaithersburg, Md.) took second in the discus with a throw of 145 feet, and senior Tom Mulcahy (Staunton, Va.) was right behind in third with a throw of 142’ 4”. Freshman Zach Jordan (Dublin, Ohio) was the team’s top finisher in the hammer throw, throwing 153 feet for third place. Sophomore Adam Gawne (Lyndonville, N.Y.) was fourth with a throw of 146’ 10”, and classmate Brandon Oliver (Richmond, Va.) threw 145’ 11” for fifth place.

Senior Eric Sandridge (Mechanicsville, Va.) vaulted a career-high 13’ 3.5” in the pole vault, finishing third in the competition. In the 400m hurdles, freshman Chris McIntosh (Owings Mill, Md.) ran 55.81 seconds for fourth place, and junior Drew Midland (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished fifth in the 5,000m run, timing 15:31.38.

The Tribe’s season continues tomorrow on the other side of the continent with distance athletes competing at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational. Sophomore Patterson Wilhelm (Lynchburg, Va.) will start things off at 9:15 pm EDT in the third section of the 5,000m. Assistant coach and 2007 Pan-American Games champion Ed Moran ’03 will be battling with 2007 World Champion Bernard Lagat and 28 of the best runners in the nation in the marquee section of the 5,000m at 11:15 pm EDT, and senior Ian Fitzgerald (Glenshaw, Pa.) takes to the track at 12:53 am EDT in the second section of the 5,000m. Redshirt-freshman Ben Massam (Chatham, N.J.) will close out the meet for the Tribe in the Payton Jordan 10,000m at 1:45 am EDT.
