Four Tribe Lax Players Earn VaSID All-State Honors

-

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—After posting outstanding seasons, four William and Mary lacrosse players have been selected to VaSID All-State teams. Sophomores Sarah Jonson, Ashley Holofcener and Grace Golden were all chosen to the first team, while sophomore Molly Wannen earned second-team honors.

One of the nation’s top defenders, Jonson led the conference and equaled a school record with 39 caused turnovers this season. Additionally, her 2.29 caused turnovers per game ranked sixth nationally as she was chosen as a WomensLacrosse.com third-team All-American. The Dallas, Texas native also earned first-team all-region and second-team all-conference distinction after totaling 45 ground balls and 39 draw controls, figures that ranked second on the team. She also provided important contributions offensively with 11 points on seven goals and four assists.

A second-team all-region and first-team all-conference honoree, Holofcener led the Tribe with 64 points on 34 goals and 30 assists. Her point total ranked sixth on the program’s single-season list, while her average of 3.76 points per game was third in the league. Additionally, her assist total ranked second on W&M’s single-season list, second in the conference and among the top 20 nationally. In addition to her impressive offensive stats, the Baltimore, Md., native registered 21 ground balls, 16 draw controls and six caused turnovers.

Golden earned first-team all-state accolades for the second consecutive year after an outstanding sophomore season. She also garnered first-team all-conference honors for the second straight season and earned second-team all-region distinction after totaling 56 points on a team-high 44 goals and 12 assists. The Manhasset, N.Y., native’s goal total ranked tied for third in the Colonial Athletic Association and stands as the 10th-best single-season figure in school history, while her points total ranked seventh in the league. A terrific all-around player, she also added 33 ground balls, 24 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers. Golden played particularly well down the stretch this season as she averaged 4.2 points per game during the last six contests.

An outstanding multi-dimensional player, Wannen was a second-team all-conference selection in 2009. In addition to leading the team and ranking second in the CAA with 40 draw controls, the Silver Spring, Md., native also totaled 30 points on 25 goals and five assists to go with 23 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. The midfielder also recorded one of the squad’s best shooting percentages with a .543 mark. While she performed well throughout the entire year, many of her best efforts came during the conference portion of the slate, as she totaled 14 goals, three assists, 14 ground balls and 16 draw controls.

In addition to equaling a program record with six conference victories, the Tribe closed out the ’09 season by winning five of its last six games and ranked 20th nationally in the final IWLCA regular season poll.
