B.W. Webb Honored as FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week

-

William and Mary redshirt freshman cornerback B.W. Webb’s incredible performance in the victory at Virginia last weekend continues to earn him national accolades, as he has been selected as the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA)/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.

Webb is the first player from a FCS program to win the weekly honor since its inception in the 2001 season. Webb will be added to the 2009 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, which helps determine candidates for the annual award that is presented to the best defensive player in college football.

Earlier this week, Webb was honored as the Sports Network National Defensive Player of the Week, while the College Sporting News chose him as a National All-Star. The Newport News, Va., native was also tabbed as the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week.

Webb posted one of the most memorable debuts in the program’s history last weekend, as he registered three interceptions in the exciting 26-14 triumph in Charlottesville. Highlighting his series of big plays was his final interception late in the fourth quarter that he returned 50 yards down the Tribe sideline for a touchdown to help secure the victory. The electrifying play was featured on national television later in the evening when ESPN SportsCenter ranked it as the day’s No. 5 Top Play.

Webb recorded his first interception late in the first quarter, while his second pick helped set up a field goal in the sec-ond quarter. In all, Webb totaled 68 return yards on his three picks.

With three interceptions, Webb nearly equaled the single-game school record of four established by Jack Bruce against Richmond in 1947.

The No. 7 Tribe will return to action again this weekend when it hosts Central Connecticut State in its home opener at Zable Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m.
