William and Mary Field Hockey Falls 2-1 to Miami in Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG - William and Mary scored first on a long breakaway late in the second half, but Miami University was able to keep chipping away and tied the match in regulation before scoring the golden goal in overtime for a 2-1 win in field hockey Saturday afternoon at Busch Field. With the loss, the Tribe moves to 3-4 on the season, while the Redhawks improve to the same record.

Box Score

"This was a disappointing loss," said coach Peel Hawthorne '80. "We came out a little flat, maybe a little emotionally drained from Thursday night, but that's the sort of thing we need to overcome. To be a great team, we need to be able to string good games together back-to-back."

Miami held control of the action for much of the game, but the Tribe defense kept the door firmly shut through the first 58 minutes, anchored once again by the play of goalkeeper Camilla Hill (Williamsburg, Va.), who had 10 saves. After a scoreless first half, and a second half that was beginning to look very much the same, William and Mary got on the board with a power-play goal in the 50th minute.

Hill started the sequence with a kick-out of a Miami cross in the circle that bounced out to junior Leah Zamesnik (Norfolk, Va.), forward on the left side. Already behind the defense, Zamesnik dribbled downfield and tried for a high-deflection shot around the onrushing Redhawk keeper. The attempt looked to be wide of the mark, but Jenna Cinalli (Fredericksburg, Va.) was there on the backside and with a diving poke, redirected the ball into the cage. The goal was Cinalli's second of the season, and the third assist of the year for Zamesnik, a career-high.

Miami would take the win, however, capitalizing on a 16-9 advantage in penalty corners to score on two chances, in the 59th minute and then the winner at the 72:05 mark. Katie Brightwell scored both for the Redhawks.

William and Mary continues its homestand with three matches next week. First up for the Tribe will be the Richmond Spiders, Wednesday, September 23 at 6 p.m.
