#1 Seed Virginia Commonwealth Claims Sixth Straight CAA Men's Tennis Championship;Rams down #2 Seed William & Mary, 4-2

RICHMOND, VA - For the sixth consecutive year, Virginia Commonwealth has captured the CAA Men's Tennis Championship as the top-seeded Rams knocked off #2 seed William & Mary, 4-2, Sunday morning at Byrd Park to lay claim to the 2001 title. The win earns the Rams a ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.
William & Mary began the match by securing the doubles point to take the early lead. No. 1 doubles featured two First Team All-CAA pairs and it showed as W&M's Trevor Spracklin and Pat Brown outlasted Frank Moser and Florian Marquardt, 9-7. In No. 2 doubles, the Tribe First Team All-CAA combo of Brian Lubin and Geoff Russell knocked off Mats Norin and Mattia Hoglund, 8-5. No. 3 doubles went the Rams way as Fernando Sanchez and Daniel Casquero downed Chuck Brooks and Chris Erickson, 8-4.

VCU won four of the five singles matches that finished to earn the championship. In No. 2 singles, CAA Rookie of the Year Marquardt defeated Second Team All-CAA performer Brown, 6-3, 6-2. W&M bounced back in the No. 3 singles as Second Team All-CAA member Lubin downed First Team All-CAA performer Casquero, 6-4, 6-4. The Rams earned the three final necessary points in the No. 4 through No. 6 singles. In No. 4, First Team All-CAA selection Fernando Sanchez knocked off Chris Erickson, 6-3, 6-1 while teammate Norin out-dueled Matt Davis, 7-6, 6-4. Mattia Hoglund won the No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Chuck Briggs.
