W&M's Emily Anderson Named CAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year

Kathy Newberry Repeats as Coach of the Year

RICHMOND, VA - William and Mary senior All-American Emily Anderson (Golf, Ill.) was named Athlete of the Year for the third time Tuesday by the Colonial Athletic Association, winning the cross country award for the first time ever. Tribe mentor Kathy Newberry '00 was also honored by the conference, winning the Coach of the Year award for the second year in a row and third time overall.

Anderson is the College's first cross country Athlete of the Year since Ali Henderson '04 in 2003, and received the award after winning her second consecutive CAA Championship. Her time was the second-fastest in conference history (after Henderson), and she went on to earn all-region and All-East accolades while helping lead the Tribe to record-tying finishes at both the Southeast Regional and ECAC Championships. She was previously named CAA Track Athlete of the Year in both 2008 and 2009, and earned All-American honors indoors in 2009 and outdoors in both 2008 and 2009.

Newberry led her team to its seventh consecutive CAA title in 2009, and saw the Tribe tie the program record for best finish at both the Southeast Regional and at the ECAC Championships. Named to the CAA 25th Anniversary Women's cross country team in August, Newberry has previously been named Coach of the Year in cross country in 2005 and 2008, and in track in 2006, 2008, and 2009.
