Freshman pitcher Brett Goodloe made an impressive debut for the Tribe, pitching six shutout innings to earn his first collegiate victory, while classmate John Farrell pitched the final two innings to earn the save. At the plate, the College was led by sophomore Stephen Arcure, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The scoring for the Tribe started in the second inning, taking a lead they would not surrender. Arcure led the inning off with a single through the right side and got to second after his second steal of the season. One batter later, with Arcure now on third, senior Chris Jensen grounded out to the shortstop, bring home Arcure and giving the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
Now with a lead, Goodloe started to settle in and was nearly unhittable. The Staunton, Virginia native, would begin to torment the Hawk hitters. In his six innings, Goodloe would only allow two hits, while striking out six.
The College would add to its lead in the fifth inning when freshman Bryson Kemler singled home junior Kevin Alas with a single up the middle. One inning later, the Tribe would get its third run of the game on a groundout from Arcure. After six innings, the Green and Gold held a 3-0 advantage.
Freshman John Sheehan came out of the bullpen to take over for Goodloe in the seventh inning and also had a strong debut for the Tribe, allowing only one hit in his inning of work.
In the eighth, W&M would put the game out of reach of the Hawks. Sophomore Chris Forsten had an RBI single to bring home Kemler, while Arcure also singled home sophomore Derrick Osteen to give the College its winning margin of 5-0.
Coming in to pitch the final two innings for the Tribe was Farrell, who pitched two perfect innings, striking out three, to earn the first save of his career.
Next up for the William and Mary Tribe baseball team will be a trip north to play in-state rival Longwood University on February, 23 at 4 p.m. For full coverage of Tribe baseball, be sure to check TribeAthletics.com.
