The William and Mary men's track and field team set collegiate-bests in nine of 11 performances Friday night at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Three of those performances marked new entries into the school record books, including the second freshman record of the young season.
Complete ResultsThe freshman record came courtesy of rookie
Alex Hedrick (Falls Church, Va.), who reset his own mark from early December in the 60m dash. Friday evening, he went a lifetime-best 7.24 seconds to lower his record by .08 seconds, and move up to fifth in school history. Hedrick's race was also tied for the 11th-fastest ever at W&M. He would later come back in the final event of the night to set a lifetime-best in the pole vault, placing 10th at a height of 4.25 meters (13-11.25).
Also improving their all-time rankings were throwers
Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.). Frenia placed fifth in the weight throw with a massive lifetime-best of 16.71m (54-10), more than two feet better than his freshman record from last season. He improved to sixth in school history with the performance, just ahead of Waterfield. Last year's CAA Field Athlete of the Championships placed seventh with a throw of 16.55m (54-3.75), improving six inches from the best he set at CNU in December.
In the 500m dash, senior
Mark Moran (McLean, Va.) was just 3/4 of a second off of the IC4A standard, finishing ninth in 1:05.92. Freshman
Michael Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.) ran 1:07.86 in his debut at the distance. Also with debuts were classmate
Matt Pittard (Lynchburg, Va.) in the 1,000m, as well as freshman
Kurtis Steck (Williamsburg, Va.) and sophomore
David Pennesi (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the mile. Junior
Ian MacFawn (LaVale, Md.) rounded out the athletes with collegiate bests, improving his best mile time a tenth of a second down to 4:22.96.
The Virginia Tech Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
