ANNAPOLIS, Md. (March 22, 2014) – William and Mary senior Landon Funiciello and sophomore Neal Courter both claimed event titles to highlight a number of impressive performances by Tribe gymnasts in the individual event finals at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships hosted by Navy on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the pair of titles, five W&M gymnasts combined to earn eight All-America honors. Additionally, Funiciello was chosen as the Senior Gymnast of the Year, while head coach Cliff Gauthier was selected as the Varsity Division Coach of the Year. It marks the second consecutive season Gauthier has earned the honor after garnering co-coach of the year distinction last spring.
Courter earned All-America honors in three events, as he claimed the vault title with a season-high 15.15, placed second on floor (14.8) and finished fourth on high bar with a career-best 14.8. It marked the second straight season in which he has claimed the vault championship.
Funiciello also earned multiple All-America honors, as he posted the top score on rings (16.0) and placed fifth on parallel bars (13.75). His impressive performance on rings marks the second consecutive season in which he has won the event at the national meet.
Senior Daniel Potemski, junior Michael Deitz and junior Jason Wang garnered All-America distinction in one event each. Potemski placed fourth on vault (14.5), while Wang (14.475) and Deitz (14.85) both finished third on pommel horse and high bar, respectively.
The Tribe will return to action when it competes at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Navy next weekend.
