WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary seniors
John Banks (men's tennis) and
Andrew Strait (men's swimming) were named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Men's At-Large First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, on Thursday. Banks graduated from W&M with a near perfect grade point average in economics and was named to Phi Beta Kappa earlier this year, while Strait, who was the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for swimming, earned his degree in mathematics.
W&M was the only school in the district, which includes all Division I schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, to have two of the 10 first-team selections. Banks and Strait both earned the honor for the second straight year and were the only CAA student-athletes named to the Capital One At-Large All-District first team. Banks was one of 19 men's tennis players nationally, while Strait was one of 20 swimmers among the 91 all-district honorees.
Banks led the Tribe in doubles victories with 24 and ranked second on the team with 20 singles triumphs as a senior. He topped the Green and Gold with 16 dual-match singles victories in 2013-14. Banks finished his W&M career with 60 singles wins and 70 doubles victories, which ranks 11th in W&M history. Along with his exploits on the court, Banks was recognized for his accomplishment in the classroom as well. He was named to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa at W&M, while also receiving the Tribe's Robert Usry Award, given to the W&M varsity athlete with the highest GPA and 75 percent of his/her degree completed by the end of their junior year. Banks is a four-time W&M Provost Award winner and a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete choice. He was named to the inaugural CAA All-Academic Team for men's tennis.
Strait wrapped up his stellar Tribe career at the CAA Championships in February, taking home six golds and leading W&M to second place in the closest-ever meet in conference history. For his efforts, Strait was named the CAA Swimmer of the Championship and the CAA Swimmer of the Year. He won all three of his individual events, the 200 IM, 100 breast, and 200 breast, for the second year in a row, and also claimed gold on the 800 free relay, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay while taking silver in the 200 free relay. Strait's times in the 200 IM (1:46.59) and as part of the 800 free relay (6:31.77) both set CAA records. All told, his six golds marked just the ninth time in CAA history that one man has won six or more events, and the first since 2006. Strait finished his career with school-records of six individual conference championships, four relay championships, and 10 total gold medals. He is a three-time CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection for men's swimming and a four-time W&M Provost Award winner.
The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes from eight districts determined geographically across the United States and Canada. The at-large category for the CoSIDA honors athletes from multiple sports, including fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have sophomore standing at their college, a GPA over 3.3 on a four-point scale, and be a starter or important reserve. The first-team selections from each of eight districts advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
