Greco’s Late Hit Lifts Tribe to Comeback Win over Hofstra

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A go-ahead RBI single by first baseman Anthony Greco lifted the William & Mary baseball team to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Hofstra on Friday night at Plumeri Park in the CAA home opener.

The Tribe (8-17, 2-2 CAA) erased a three-run deficit in the late innings as they scored five runs over the final two frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED
LHP Nick Lottchea got the starting nod for W&M. He posted a scoreless first inning in unconventional fashion, recording two pickoffs that negated an error and a walk.

Hofstra (10-15, 2-2) took the lead in the top of the second on an RBI single. In the bottom half of the inning, W&M responded with four runs. The rally was kick-started by a bases-loaded two-RBI single from third baseman Jamie Laskofski.

The Tribe extended its lead to 4-1 after consecutive sacrifice flies off the bats of Jerry Barnes III and Owen Wilson.

Lottchea found his groove in the third inning, striking out a pair as he retired the side in order. His final line was three innings with one earned run, two hits, and four strikeouts.

Neither side mustered any offense in the third and fourth innings. Hofstra retook the lead with a five-spot in the fifth, keynoted by a three-run homer by Tyler Cox, as the Pride went ahead 6-4.

The visitors added another run in the sixth that was unearned due to a Tribe throwing error. In the home half of the frame, right fielder Christian Rush gave W&M a boost with a solo homer that made it a 7-5 ballgame.

However, Hofstra would respond with two more in the seventh inning that boosted their lead to 9-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tribe got their first two runners on when center fielder Ben Parker led off the frame with a double, followed by a Greco walk. After a successful double steal, second baseman Derek Holmes drove in both with a double down the left field line, making it 9-7.

With Holmes later getting to third base, Lucas Carmichael drew a throw from the Pride catcher that induced a rundown, allowing Holmes to score the Tribe's eighth run of the contest.

RHP Carter Lovasz entered from the pen and got a critical shutdown inning, striking out two batters.

That set the stage for the eighth-inning heroics. Laskofski led off the frame with a single and, after advancing to second, was driven by a base hit from Parker, tying the game. It was Parker's third hit of the night.

After Parker advanced to second on a balk, Greco singled through the right side to give W&M a 10-9 lead.

Greco was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk, reaching base three times.

Lovasz was lights out in the top of the ninth, striking out all three batters he faced. Lovasz got the win with two scoreless innings, totaling five strikeouts. Hofstra reliever Brayden Gregg was charged with the loss.
